There’s hardly a more widely-accepted stereotype than the sleezy used car salesman. While this stereotype is certainly not true for all salesman, it’s certainly enough to make your nerves jump a bit before heading to your local car lot to shop for a new or used car.
In a situation where you could be spending thousands of dollars, there’s no room at all for high-pressure sales tactics. Below are some of the worst lines we’ve heard of commonly used by used car salesman to get you to sign on the dotted line.
1. “What do I need to do to get you into this car today?”
We’ve all heard this one before. Any line designed to get you into a vehicle “today” is a manipulation, and you’d think car salesmen would have come up with a better line than this one by now. Never let anyone make you feel pressured into taking a vehicle on the spot, especially if you aren’t sure if it’s the exact car you’re looking for.
2. “I don’t think we’ll be offering this deal next week.”
Not only will they likely be offering this same deal next week, but it will probably be there for many weeks after, too. This line plays on a buyer’s inherent fear of missing out (FoMO) on a great deal. Don’t let yourself be so caught up in scoring a good deal that you make a snap decision before thinking through all of the consequences.
3. “We could be sold out by the end of the day.”
Even if they are out by the end of the day, new shipments are arriving all the time. Again, this plays on your FoMO. If one dealership does sell out of what you’re looking for, there are many other places to buy.
4. “We have this car priced so low because of this problem.”
If you notice an engine problem during the test drive or some other issue, and your salesman gives you this line, it’s a red flag for sure. If you still want the car, you should likely negotiate a much lower price because of the issues. It will also pay to have the vehicle looked at by an impartial mechanic before making your decision.
5. “There’s no better time to buy than now.”
So, you just happened to walk into the dealership at the absolute best time ever to buy a car? What luck! Even if the economy is in a great position for car buying, high-pressure sales lines like this one should steer you in the opposite direction.
At Platte City-Airport Chrysler, we strive to go above and beyond to make sure your car-buying experience is enjoyable and that you are satisfied with the end result. We guarantee you won’t hear any of these sleazy car salesman lines at our no-hassle dealership!
