The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are like siblings within Jeep’s lineup: each was designed in preparation for both off-road adventure as well as the everyday commute through the city. However, these two models also have their subtle, but important differences.
Model Type and Storage
First of all, the Cherokee is considered a compact SUV while the Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV. This difference essentially means that the Grand Cherokee has more room readily available for passengers and cargo than the Cherokee does. Both vehicles provide a comfortable, stylish interior.
Engine and Efficiency
The Cherokee’s lighter frame and smaller size means it can receive power from a smaller 4-cylinder engine while still maintaining a respectable 21/30 mpg city and highway respectively. The Grand Cherokee, since it is the larger model, comes standard with a V6 engine and, while it exhibits higher horsepower, drops to 19/26 mpg overall.
The standard Cherokee boasts the cheapest base price at $23,695 for the most basic trim. The newest Grand Cherokees, on the other hand, begin at $30,395. Of course, taking advantage of upgrades and higher trim levels means that the price of each can rise quickly.
Both models excel in different safety categories; however, safety is a top priority for both. Firstly, the Cherokee, due to its smaller size, scores very well against rollover accidents and comes with a standard anti-theft system. In contrast, the Grand Cherokee’s anti-theft system is an optional package, as well as several off-road safety features.
The Grand Cherokee base trim is able to tow up to 6,200 lbs while the Cherokee’s towing capacity sits at a maximum of 2,000. This comes primarily from the standard engines which are a V6 and 4-cylinder respectively.
Overall, budget is a big part of deciding between the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee. If you have the budget, upgrading to a higher towing capacity, more room and more optional features can be a big plus.
